Edith K. McKinzie established and coordinates the Hawaiian Language Newspaper Index Project, and members of her team include recognized language and culture experts.

These scholars review articles, notices and advertisements found in early Hawaiian language newspapers and determine appropriate index terms that identify significant topics, proper names and place names.

The index is made available in English to stimulate interest in and use of this valuable resource, and to emphasize the need to build a greater proficiency in understanding the Hawaiian language of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
