Comments: Variety that has splotches, resembling the ‘elepaio bird (Handy & Handy, 1972). There are several explanations of the meaning of this name; according to some, this kalo grows spontaneously up near the woodlands where the beautiful elepaio bird makes its home; others say this kalo must be planted only at early dawn, while the elepaio bird is singing; usually planted in unirrigated fields; corm is suffused with yellow, the leaves are clear green, spotted or mottled with darker green (MacCaughey & Emerson, 1913)
