Mokoli'i (Chinaman's Hat)   21 Sep 2007

Trip Goal: To continue our on-going ant survey and see if any seabirds survived the ant attacks. We were also accompanied by a photographer from Hana Hou magazine.

Accomplishments: We assessed the ant population abundance using ant bait cards and searched for seabirds.
 

Biologist Account: Heather:
"The ants were abundant throughout the islet, but nearly as much as they were during our August visit. These surveys are helping us to understand their population cycles, which will help us eradicate them. As we had anticipated, there were no chicks remaining on the islet. Sergio, our photographer, was able to photograph ants invading an egg. Hopefully, this will be tha last unsuccessful nesting season on Mokoli'i."
