Intern Account: Malia:
(Apr 5): "For the second ant food preference field day, I willingly switched to Mokuauia Islet, located about 100 yards offshore. The hike out there was about ankle deep the entire way on and off the islet, probably the shallowest I or Jaap had ever seen it. Considering I've only been out there twice I can't really say it was the shallowest its every been, but I trust Jaap's judgement and believe that today was the shallowest day ever. We set down all five ant bait stations in about twenty minutes, opposite of what happened on Mokoli'i where we were sprinting to race the clock. While waiting for the forty minutes to pass when we could pick up our first set, we pulled the evil purple flowers that continue to take over the island. Since they are difficult to remove by hand, they need to be sprayed to kill them. After we picked up all five ant bait stations, concluded that the ants take to the greenish one the best, and scolded a kayaker for dragging his kayak over seabird burrows, we were on our way. This island was a nice change after getting ripped to shreds at Mokoli'i"

Intern Account: Princes (Apr 7):
"I headed out to the islets again on Friday. However, this time me and Malia switched places. I went to Mokuauia with Jaap while Malia and Heather went to Mokolii. This time the tides were really high so I was kind of worried about crossing the water to get to the island. Once we got there I was wet from head to toe and I felt like a drowned rat after crossing the water, but we made it safely to the island and back."
