Mokoli'i (Chinaman's Hat)   14-16 Oct 2007

Trip Goal: To conduct an arthropod survey.

Accomplishments: We conducted our arthropod survey using a combination of methods: transect with sweep net, pitfall traps, pan traps, litter sifting, ant cards, and host searches.

Intern Account: Hailey:
"Although it was not my first time to Chinaman's Hat or Mokoli'i, this time was very different from any other. So really it was like a day of first for me. First of all, it was the first time I've been there fully clothed in a long sleeve shirt and long pants. I was in a sweat the entire time, but better sweaty then all scratched up! When we first arrived on the island we split up in pairs on separate sides of the island to set up traps for an the arthropod survey, but shortly after I went to the opposite side because the side I was on was a little to steep and dangerous. At times setting up the traps were difficult, especially when we had to dig a hole in the rocky soil making it nearly impossible. Appling the blue cheese to the ring of the bowl/cup was probably the worst part of the day. The cheese reeked and literally sunk into my skin so I could smell it for the rest of the day. But overall I really enjoyed my day at Chinaman's Hat. Since the island had never really been surveyed before, I felt like my work was very useful. My only regret is that I couldn't make it to collect the traps. But the pictures don't lie, by the looks of it, we were very successful in collecting insects, which was what we were hoping for."
