Mokulua   29 Feb 2007

Trip Goal: To outplant native species and remove invasive plant species.

Accomplishments: To get all our plants and heavy gear to the island, we loaded everything into a helicopter slingload. We planted 94 plants total (27 Chenopodium oahuense, 12 Eragrostis variabilis, 32 Tribulus cistoides, 23 Sceavola cericea), spread 1 lb of Tribulus seed, replaced 19 signs, and 3 sign posts, weed wacked the invasive grass, Cenchrus echinatus, around native plants to open areas for outplanting, and spot-sprayed other weed species (Leucaena leucocephela, Passiflora suberosa, and Bidens alba). We also collected arthropods.

Intern Account: Louise:
"I woke up earlier than usual for work this morning. But it was well worth it, after all, we were taking a chopper to work. I couldn't complain. We landed on the stony shores of Moku Iki to commence our restoration of the bird sanctuary islet. We watched as the helicopter disappeared and reappeared like a small house fly in the sky; it carried the native plants we would spread around Moku Iki. Heather and I collected arthropods with butterfly nets and put them into containers for identification later. Digging in the dirt was somewhat difficult as it was extremely arid and rocky. I managed to successfully plant and hydrate several native plant species. Fortunately, all this could be accomplished because the birds had not yet come back to nest on the islet, so we did not have them to contend with. After a hard day's work, our islet restoration on Moku Iki came to a productive conclusion."
