Trip Goal: To remove invasive weeds and plant native species as part of a community based project to restore an old Hawaiian fishing village.

Accomplishments: Conducted a bird survey, helped remove long-thorned kiawe trees, and helped outplant coastal species.
 

Biologist Account: Heather:
"Local canoe clubs helped shuttle about 50 volunteers over to the island in their outriggers. We were given a tour of the island and began our bird survey. Several species of shorebird were using the tidal flats around the islet and we talked with local families to see if there were others that we missed on this visit. We then helped out at the various restoration stations on the island by removing long-thorned kiawe (with thorns over 2 inches long!) and planting native species."
