Existing examples of traditional Hawaiian featherwork give clear evidence of the advanced degree of Hawaiian artistry and aesthetics. Featherwork included capes, cloaks, helmets, lei and religious images. Each task in the production of these feathered treasures required careful attention and meticulous handwork, and was accomplished only by specialists with considerable skill. It was fitting that these masterpieces were reserved for ali‘i.
