‘Umi

“...‘Umi-a-Liloa did two things with his own hands,
farming and fishing. He built some large wet taro
patches in Waipi‘o, and farming was done on all the
lands…Another thing that brought fame to ‘Umi-a-Liloa
was his battle with gods…..It was said that one of the
causes of the trouble was ‘Umi-a-Liloa’s false
promises. He was asked for his children….and he had
promised to grant the request, but after a child was
born he refused to give it up, saying they must wait for
the next one…..As a result, gods fought against men.”
