Description: Shelf reef extending ca. 240 meters from the Natatorium wall. Depth varies from 0.5m to 4m. Wave action is stronger on the outer reef, where waves reach over two meters in height, while the near shore area is calmer and more protected. The presence of channels devoid of coral growth that run perpendicular to the shore is associated with underwater springs. Natural springs and urban run-off are the main sources of freshwater in the Waikiki area. The relative abundance of the green genus Ulva sp suggests a high freshwater input. Sport yachts anchor on the outer reef.

Samples: Samples were collected along an E-W transect from the Natatorium wall, and another 100m transect perpendicular to the wall. Gracilaria salicornia, Ulva reticulata and Ulva fasciata dominate the inner reef area. The former continues to expand exponentially as result of fragmentation by pedestrian traffic.
