Description: Lahaina Boat Harbor is protected on three sides by a 12 ft (3.5 m) high lava rock wall. This wall is not very permeable thereby allowing little water motion through the walls. Tides are the determinant force in the water dynamics of the harbor. The southern end of the harbor is virtually devoid of algae as a result of minimal water movement or exchange. Nearer the entrance to the harbor large stands of Polysiphonia sp occur attached to submerged ropes and, often, the hulls of vessels. Small populations of a few other algae were found on the intertidal rocks at the entrance. The reef area immediately to the south of the harbor caries a wide range of healthy and flourishing algae but few of these ever manage secure a foothold within the harbor itself.

Freshwater Inputs: Extensive freshwater seepage from various sources but mainly the large freshwater ponds south of the town as well as rainwater drainage.
