Heather
Terrestrial ecologist
Heather received her M.S. in Botany from the University of Hawaii at Manoa studying the ecololgical effects of seabird guano. For the past 5 years she has been working towards the conservation and restoration of Hawaii’s offshore islets and the Northwest Hawaiian Islands.
David
Entomologist
David has 20+ years experience working as a research scientist conducting entomological research, fieldwork and surveys throughout the Pacific. He has led and or contributed to most of Bishop’s arthropod surveys and has conducted baseline inventories of arthropods, plants, birds, and other vertebrates on most of the Hawaiian Islands.
Kim
Terrestrial intern
Kim Morishige is a 2007 graduate of Kamehameha High School. She participated in girls Cross Country and the Recycling Club. She graduated with an Honors Diploma and will continue on to the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She will major in Marine Science and minor in Hawaiian Studies.
Malia
Terrestrial intern
Malia Paresa is a 2007 graduate of Kamehameha High School where she was an active member of the recycling club, National Honor Society and marching band as well as cross country, track, soccer, and and canoe paddling crew. She will attend the University of S. CA in the fall majoring in Environmental studies.
Princes
Terrestrial Intern
Princes is a Junior at Farrington High School. She is interested in film, especially environmental documentaries and conservation. This project includes many firsts for her: first time camping, hiking, boating, kayaking and much more!
Steve
Marine ecologist
Dr. Steve L. Coles has been a research zoologist at Bishop since 1995. His research includes coral bleaching and the effects of temperature, salinity and other environmental stresses on the physiology and ecology of reef corals, corals and reefs in extreme environments and the extent, occurrence and impact of marine introduced species.
Louise
Marine intern
Louise is working towards a B.S. in Biology with a focus on Marine Biology from the University of Hawaii. She has worked for the University removing alien algae from Kaneohe Bay, helped map coral reefs in the NWHI and assisted in making benthic habitat maps for other Pacific islands. Currently, she works as the ‘algae specialist’ for Bishop.
Melanie
Marine intern
Melanie graduated with a B.S. in Marine Biology from San Francisco State University. She is an A.A.U.S. Scientific Diver and worked as a NMFS fisheries observer. She is currently the Marine Invertebrate Intern for the Offshore Islets Project. Melanie will also begin Graduate School at the University of Hawaii in the Zoology Department this fall.
Jiny
Terrestrial Intern
Jiny received her B.S. in Marine Biology at UCSC in 2002. She has always been interested in the conservation and ecology of the coastal environment. She is currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Botany at UH and hoping to pursue a career in wildlife biology and management.
Clare
Terrestrial Intern
Clare is a junior at Kamehameha High School. She is a member of the cross country, swimming, and water polo teams. She is also a member of the campus literary publication group, Ho`okumu, the National Honor Society, Hui Lama, a club dedicated to Hawaiian plant and cultural studies, and an officer in the school recycling club.
Hailey
Terrestrial Intern
Hailey is a junior at Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus. She is an active member of the National Honor Society, Hui Lama, Ho'okumu, Recycling Club, Running Club, and PSAT Team. And she participates in both cross-country and track.
Ryan
Terrestrial Intern
Ryan is an undergraduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He has a strong interest in all aspects of biology and especially loves diving and water sports. A recent class in entomolgy has inspired him to learn more about Hawaii's insect fauna and he is excited to see what the offshore islets have to offer.
